Sam Altman Warns of China’s AI Advancements Amid U.S. Chip Export Policies
Sam Altman, during a meeting with journalists in the Presidio, expressed DEEP concerns about China's rapid progress in AI development. "I'm worried about China," he stated, emphasizing that the competition isn't a simple race but a complex interplay of inference capacity, research, and product development. The U.S. focus on blocking chip exports, he argued, is a narrow strategy compared to China's holistic approach to building the entire AI stack.
Former President Trump's stringent chip export ban, implemented in April 2025, was recently relaxed under a new deal allowing Nvidia and AMD to sell modified "China-safe" chips—provided they forfeit 15% of revenue from these sales to the U.S. government. Altman remained skeptical of such measures, questioning their effectiveness in curbing China's AI ambitions.
